Software Engineer Product Lead, February 2020 - June 2021

2020 was a year of great change for everyone, myself included.

I became a product lead for my collaborative project management web application. Because of the popularity of my application the amount of work became too much for one person to handle. After participating in a variety of interviews, two fresh college grads joined my team. Since then I’ve been striving to provide a good work environment for them. My personal approach has been to be hands on, approachable, and proactive in getting them engaged with Northrop Grumman as a whole.

I also experienced my first first major setback. Despite positive reviews from a majority of internal customers, one significant client decided not to proceed with the project management application that I developed. I took a step back, reached out for feedback, and reflected on what our customers needed to succeed in their roles. The answer: a no-code collaborative project management web application.

After leading the proposal development with my team, we got the green light to proceed with a minimum viable product; all whilst continuing our current maintenance relationships with our customers. The feedback for our no-code solution is extremely positive! And our customers tell us they are excited to use our product as soon as it’s available.

Software Engineer 2, August 2018 - January 2020

My new software job was with a small group whose goal was to make modern web applications for a variety of internal customers. We were a startup within a company, moving fast in an industry that’s known to be slow.

Our work was extremely hands on. We talked to our customers daily to figure out their pain points, and constantly kept them in the loop throughout development to ensure that we were creating useful tools. I was involved in an assortment of projects: a tool to analyze and optimize product proposals, an application to manage and categorize photos, a web portal to track hardware compatibility.

It was during this time that I created my baby, a collaborative project management web application. I was able to bring it through the entire product life cycle; from planning and design all the way to maintenance. To date it is the most used application to come out of our software group. ~1000 users across multiple areas of Northrop Grumman rely on my tool to conduct meetings and reviews, reducing time spent on each review by 40% compared to the old process.

When I walk the halls I love seeing my tool out in the wild. Whether on the shared screen of a meeting, or on someones laptop, it brings me joy to see that I was able to create something that affects so many peoples lives. My experience really emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction, because without them the software we create is meaningless.

Electrical Engineer 1, July 2017 - July 2018

On July 24th, 2017 I arrived at Northrop Grumman bright and starry eyed, ready to make a difference. My first role: create electrical design diagrams to aid in satellite testing. It was as monotonous as a job could get.

I’ll admit that I’m inherently a bit lazy, so if I can find a way to make something more efficient I’m going to do it. This job was made to be automated. I taught myself Python to efficiently comb through circuit data. In my spare time I learned how to create web applications so that we could replace legacy software. My tinkering was presented to high level managers, and eventually it caught the eye of a new software team within Northrop Grumman!

USC presented unique opportunities to grow in ways I couldn't even fathom at the time.

Voluteering with Alpha Phi Omega introduced me to my favorite service activity: tutoring kids at the housing projects in Watts. Here, I learned the value of positive impact and how it can bring about real change in peoples lives.

Later on I had the opportunity to serve as Webmaster, and then chapter President. This gave me valuable experience in understanding what it takes to incentivize people and create a collaborative and nurturing environment with which to do good for the community.
